Speech to Text Software: Attempt Number One

This post will show you what I said and what this stuff where code [Line spoken should be, “the software heard”]. I strike out the software’s mistakes and picked [put] the correct version in practice [brackets]. Here we go…

Dragon NaturallySpeaking boxFor those of you not familiar with beast to pick up where [speech to text software], you begin by planting the stuff where [training the software] with your voice [for]. I completed a puce shim at this Nilan my guess asked them to wood made the top then the average user. [I completed a few sessions of this knowing my deaf accent would need more help than the average user].

Victim … err… product is Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred. I opted to go with v9 instead of 10 to save cash and not worry about crashing problems it supposedly has.

Needless to say, I’m not to let that [I’m off to a bad start].

I’m trying the speech recognition software. Unhorsed for get a pass when I say [I’m hopeful it’ll catch what I say]. Starla far [so far] it’s not perfect. It looks like it needs blood twanging [more training]. IM into this to write auto close [I’m anxious to write articles].

I have not been able to write because to [of] have my hand touchingly [surgery]. I have t will [it typed “two,” so I said “backspace backspace” and “o”] may [lay] off use and [using] my hand because of Salonika [swelling].

Let’s go back to planning [training].

(Conducted more training… another attempt…)

Linked [I couldn’t wait] to play this game. The previous two games Laden [captivated] me. I could not imagine it could get better. That [but] it did.

That’s still the see at clout a.m. it [cursing here. No translation as this is a family-friendly blog].

MP3 of the above script (opens in new window so you can follow script). I talked slower than usual for the software’s stake.

  1. I bought Dragon Speaking Naturally and installed it recently – for me, it’s a timesaver, not an obligation.

The accuracy on my end was amazing. But I also speak distinctly and clearly (thank you, Mom, for those public speaking sessions way back) and have no major accent.

The worst? Sitting there talking to yourself feels DAMNED silly 🙂

But SPEED? Holy shit. 500 words in 4 minutes. 5 minutes to edit. There’s no way I could type that quickly.

  2. Thanks, Brad.

James, I have 12 years of torturous speech therapy under my non-belt. Took lots of public speaking classes (I enjoyed them) and taught a few. Will make a better recording of my actually using the software and keep re-using the script to see if it improves.

I accept it won’t be perfect, but like you said… if editing takes too long… it’s not worth it. I’m trying to cut down using the hand (oops… better stop writing now).

  3. Thank you, thank you for trying this and reviewing it! I’ve long thought about trying this software as I’ve developed some elbow swelling and now typing is painful.

I’ve also been tempted to try and use it to interpret audio stuff via the ‘net. Think it would be any good at all?

  4. Jamie, thank you. MP3 wasn’t my best speech or even the way I speak normally as I was working harder for the software. But you can always ignore it if I sound as bad as or worse than Lina Lamont.

Joanna, I would’ve thought you’d know what blood twang was. It sounds like UK English 🙂

Karen, I don’t know. I’ll just have to train the software a little every day and check its progress. At least, it gave me a post (sort of) as I’m trying to stop writing — not having much luck (but writing MUCH less than normal).
