I’m passionate about accessibility and disability inclusion. Educating people about accessibility and disability inclusion is my mission in life. I want that to show on this website as I’m committed to providing a fully accessible website experience for everyone. This includes those who use assistive technologies like screen readers, screen magnifiers, and alternative input devices to navigate the web.
I know what it’s like to be locked out of conversations and excluded from access. I don’t want that to happen to you. That’s why I’m constantly checking pages to ensure they’re accessible. I’m self-employed. I make mistakes. I appreciate it when people like you let me know of a mistake or a problem.
Ongoing Efforts to Ensure Accessibility
I follow Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 as my accessibility guidelines for determining accessibility. These are internationally agreed-upon standards that cover a wide range of recommendations and best practices for making content useable. As I add new pages to this website, I check them against these standards.
Website accessibility is an ongoing process. It’s a journey with no finish line. I continually test content and features for WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance. I fix any issues to ensure we meet or exceed the standards. I use industry-standard tools such as the Accessibility Checker WordPress Plugin, color contrast analyzers, keyboard-only navigation techniques, and Flesch-Kincaid readability tests to test this website.
The meryl.net website has been around since 1994. There are old posts that may not have alt text or proper headings. (I’ve changed content management systems multiple times and some things got lost in translation.) Whenever I edit them, I also update them for accessibility. All current pages should be accessible. Accessibility is a journey. It’s something I work on daily.
This is part of my effort to make everyone’s experience here a welcoming and enjoyable one. I make every effort to provide information accessible to everyone. However, I cannot guarantee or be responsible for the accessibility of third-party websites linked to from here as well as third-party plugins. I do my best to use accessible plugins.
