We have too many choices when it comes to electronics. Digital cameras being a big one. But I miraculously narrowed down my list to two cameras. They’re different in two ways. One is a point-and-shoot and the other is closer to a professional’s model with manual focusing and such. I’m no professional, though.
Canon PowerShot SD550 (point ‘n shoot): ultra-compact, no manual focusing, uses Lithium battery pack, and movies not as good quality of A620.
Canon PowerShot A620 (professional-like): heavy plus it uses four AA batteries, better movie quality, and manual focus.
They’re neck-and-neck for me. I wanted a camera that can take movies longer than the lousy 14 seconds my current camera takes. These can hold up to 1gb of movies. Plenty. I like the Lithium battery back because I usually buy a backup and carry it in my pack. No problem.
Decisions, decisions, decisions!

I faced the same decision a few weeks back and went for the SD550, the two things that finally decided me were the following:
the “manual focus” feature of the A620 isn’t similar to what you’d get with a SLR camera; it’s much less ergonomic and in the end, quite frustrating.
having a battery pack is really nice! And the battery life is pretty good (most of the reviews I read said otherwise).
As for picture quality, I’m pretty satisfied even though night shots tend to be a bit noisy… if you want to see for yourself, some of my

I was debating between those same two cameras. I finally ended up buying the SD550. The 650 has many more manual features, and is akin to driving a car with manual transmission. It is also much bigger than the SD550. The 650 uses AA batteries, while the SD550 uses proprietary rechargables. If the battery dies, it may be more convenient to to be able to run into a CVS and pick up some AA’s.
I decided to go with the SD550 because of the size advantage. I can easily slip it into my pocket and have it at-hand for those candid shots. I had to decide between advanced manual features (the 620) and size/convenience (SD550). Since I’m not likely to use advanced manual features (I’m not exactly a pro), the SD550 was the best choice for me.
