Director’s Note

Welcome to Oliver!, my first Community Theatre production!

NTPA’s Mike Mazur, a Charles Dickens scholar, and I had a conversation about Oliver!. He told me that everyone in the musical is an outsider. They are alone and looking to belong or become a part of something. They long for a family or community.

While this is true onstage…our cast is quite the opposite!

We have parents performing with their children, husbands and wives performing together…we even have actors performing with their grandparents! In addition we have NTPA Staff Members, current NTPA Youth Actors, NTPA Youth Alumni, NTPA Community Theatre veterans…and even those new to the NTPA family! This is what Community Theatre is all about, and I’m honored to be a part of it.

I was asked about what Oliver! means to me. Although there are several directions one could go, what is most resonating to me is the theme of love. As Oliver is searching for someone to love him and someone to love in return, I’m reminded that we are all worthy of love, and that our circumstances do not define our worth as people. Oliver’s journey made me remember a line from The Color Purple. The character of Celie says, “God forgot about me”. I feel like Oliver could say these same words. And while I can not explain the hardships on the journey of Oliver (or Celie), they were not forgotten. There was a higher plan in store for both of them. What does Oliver! mean to you?

May you all choose kindness and prioritize community in your life.

Much Love,

Nick Mann

Synopsis

Set in Victorian England, Oliver! follows the journey of an orphaned boy named Oliver Twist based on Charles Dickens’ classic tale. After escaping from a workhouse, he meets a group of juvenile criminals led by the cunning Fagin. Oliver becomes entangled in a world of theft and mischief, but his inherent goodness and innocence make him an unlikely protagonist in this dark setting.
