Wordie

Discovered Wordie through Wall Street Journal. The site provides a playground for making lists of words. How do you have fun with word lists? Logophiles and other folks are having sharing words they love, hate, fun to say, whatever else tickles their fancies. Every word comes with links to a diversity of dictionaries.

Comments are included, but unfortunately not many leave comments. I’d love to hear their thoughts about the word. It’d be nice if a link to comments would appear in the reference list for each word. The hard part is finding users who have created their own lists — not just list of words, but word lists. That didn’t make sense, did it? For example, edwardvielmetti has over 800 words plus a handful of other lists such as 1982, scrap words, what does that word mean?, words ending in ball, words from my todo list. Now that’s interesting.

I chose this for today’s entry as I needed to do something fast with all the work I need to do. So much for that — I find myself trying to explore the Wordie site deeper. I can see how this could get addicting. My mind is blank as I try to come up with entries for hateful business words.

If you have or create a Wordie account, post it here with a link. My list is puny, but it’s a start.

    Ah, hateful business words…

    • Any noun that has been turned into a verb (”lunching”, “diarizing” being two particularly odious examples.)

    • Starbursting…a politically correct replacement for brainstorming in the UK.

    • “Thinking outside the box” which has now become such a cliche…

Some of the words on yuri_g’s list seem pretty innocuous but I have to concur when it comes to “monetize”, “incentivize” and “leverage”, the last of which has been seriously overused.
